For the past 15 years, composer, producer and performer Anna Meredith has been praised as one of the pioneering voices in contemporary electronic, pop, classical and club music. Increasingly difficult to pin down genre-wise, Meredith has been Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, served as a musical mentor for Drum n Bass pioneer, Goldie, regularly appears on BBC Radio 3 and has performed across the world from classical stages to being a staple at adventurous music festivals like Rewire. In 2016, her debut album Varmints caught many ears, receiving universal acclaim and landed on many “Best Of” lists. The album’s blending of classical, baroque, avant-garde, pop, electronic and house, illustrated Meredith as a musical polyglot. Her 2019 follow up album, FIBS, Saw Meredith flexing her dance and pop music muscles further resulting in a blissful, anthemic, pummeling collection of songs that once again illustrated her musical fluidity. Her outputs don’t stop there. 2021 saw the release of Bumps Per Minute: 18 Studies for Dodgems, a full reinvention of fairground music (dodgems) which was part of the DODGE installation at Somerset House in London. The pieces are ostensibly fairground melodies doused in musical XTC and LSD to a stunning effect.
Alongside all of this, Anna Meredith found her way into the film scoring world. She rose to prominence scoring the 2018 Bo Burnham film Eighth Grade, which received universal acclaim, holds a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and won 36 different awards. Her next project was composing for the 2019 Netflix series Living With Yourself by Peabody and Emmy award winning director Timothy Greenberg starring Paul Rudd. In 2021 she composed for the Channel 4 pandemic film Help, and in 2023 she composed for the A24 film Tuesday plus The End We Start From. Not to mention various syncs and advert compositions, Meredith is a selective, yet formidable force in the new era of music for moving images.
During this workshop, Meredith will share her experiences crossing over into the world of composing for moving images from a professional and artistic perspective. She’ll give demonstrations and walk-throughs of different clips and scenes and dive deeper into her sound design and composition process. After that, participants will be given a clip from the Sound & Vision archive and challenged to compose for that small fragment. We’ll follow that up with a show and tell and reflections session.
